ICD-10 Code B02.1 – Zoster Meningitis (2026): Diagnosis, Symptoms & Billing Guide
2026 ICD-10-CM Diagnosis Code B02.1 – Zoster meningitis
What it is
B02.1 identifies meningitis caused by reactivation of varicella-zoster virus. Use it when the record documents zoster involvement of the meninges, not just shingles on the skin.
Clinical signs
Clinical features vary; refer to documentation. Typical meningitis findings may include headache, neck stiffness, fever, photophobia, or altered mental status, with evidence linking the illness to zoster infection.
When to use this code
Use B02.1 when the provider diagnoses zoster meningitis or records meningitis due to herpes zoster. It is appropriate for confirmed cases where CNS involvement is documented. If the chart only says shingles without meningitis, this code is not supported.
Do not use for
Do not use this code for uncomplicated herpes zoster, postherpetic neuralgia, or meningitis from another cause. Check documentation if the infection is described as encephalitis, myelitis, or a mixed neurologic complication.
Coding tip
Link the meningitis diagnosis to zoster in the provider note before assigning B02.1.
