ICD-10 Code F01 – Vascular Dementia (2026): Diagnosis, Symptoms & Billing Guide
2026 ICD-10-CM Diagnosis Code F01 – Vascular dementia
What it is
F01 identifies vascular dementia, a decline in memory and thinking caused by cerebrovascular disease. You use it when documentation links cognitive impairment to vascular brain injury rather than another dementia type.
Clinical signs
Common findings include impaired memory, slowed thinking, poor judgment, and reduced ability to manage daily activities. Clinical features vary; refer to documentation for evidence of a vascular pattern or associated neurologic deficits.
When to use this code
Use F01 when the provider documents vascular dementia, multi-infarct dementia, or dementia due to stroke or other cerebrovascular disease. It may also apply when the record clearly states dementia is secondary to vascular causes. Check documentation if the cause is mixed or unspecified.
Do not use for
Do not use F01 for Alzheimer disease, Lewy body dementia, or dementia without a documented vascular cause. If the chart does not support vascular etiology, check documentation and select the more specific diagnosis.
Coding tip
Look for explicit linkage between dementia and cerebrovascular disease in the provider note before assigning F01.
